Paulo M. E. Campos

2002

Body and Power in Architecture: a search for a sensory
pedagogy – Case study
2006

Renato César Ferreira de Souza,

The ‘ocularcentrism’ is analysed in philosophy, sciences and arts, as a phenomenon characterized by the domination of visual aspects in the western culture. The implications of the prevalence of only one sense (vision) in the culture is disclosed and its consequences to the learning process in high education are closer examined. The article presents the results of two case studies where the educational outcomes were designed to engage students of Architecture in a corporal relation with the purposed exercises, avoiding excessive visual references and aiming to achieve new paradigms towards a sensory pedagogy. This essay was handed in to the first year of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PCHE) at School of Education of University of Sheffield, 2006.

Creativity and process of creation in the space of teaching Architecture: A case study at the University of Sheffield
2007

Renato César Ferreira de Souza

This case study, written to the course of PCHE (postgraduate Certificate in Higher education) at University of Sheffield addresses attention to creativity in architectural subjects related to the teaching of Architecture in the Shool of Architecture of University of Sheffield. During that course the students should join two main abilities: the one of imagining solutions in three dimensions and the one of bringing those imaginations to the real world, through drawings and models. Different types of exercises are strategically demanded to help the students achieving other related skills, but in most of them the creativeness of the solutions provided is a condition sine qua non to the progress in the course. Despite not being stated clearly, being creative is an educational outcome that permeates all the stated pedagogical objectives in the course.

The Impact of Information Technology on the physical space
2006

Renato César Ferreira de Souza
Maria Lucia Malard

 This paper was issued as part of the procedings from the International Seminar on Design, Lisbon, Portugal, ISCE 2006. It discusses the impacts of the usage of Information Technology in the physical space of the city. It discusses the concept of “place” and “technology”, trying to understand how they are related. It examines the lack of one convergent approach that considers the formal structure of places and their relation with a sort of network logic present in the everyday life.

Presenting how the terms “place” and “space” have been used as territorial metaphors, it discusses some points of view in history (Braudel, Foucault), political realm (Nancy, Lefebvre), gender (Irigaray), poetic and imagination (Foucault, I-Fu Tuan, Relph), sociology of the polis and the city (Benjamim, Arendt), nomadism (Deleuze, Guattari) and others . It will be shown how rarely those theories discuss the qualities of place and attributes of space considering their physical structure and properties, adding up to others contributions. Instead, it will be pointed out that each theory tries to find a place at work, part of something else ongoing and dynamic, an ingredient in something else. It will be studied two main positions about the usage of IT: one which is characterized by a deterministic point of view, and other that claims for a new importance to the concepts of space and place.

Passed some years after the deterministic and futuristic predictions, IT is now being regarded as it is bound up with the production of material spaces and places in a co-evolutionary process. This relational point of view analyses the articulation between place-based and electronic networked relationships and the linkages between telecommunications and the city. It reinforces that materially constructed urban places and IT networks stand in a state of recursive interaction, shaping each other. Thus, the implications of IT to the physicality will be, far from simply collapsing spatial barriers or unifying everything within a dynamic and dialectical result.

Through this new point of view, “Place” becomes an embedded and heterogeneous range of spatial process that always needs to consider a continual recombination of people’s activities, their specific places and the different ways of interaction they use. To exemplify those latter concepts, it will be analysed a project to urban recast in South Korea, which made large use of IT applied in the urban space. The conclusion will ask whether the impact of IT is so decisive to Architecture, in terms of a real changing or not, introducing other topics to be considered in a deep reflection.

Videogames: an Interactive Agent between Self-builders and Technicians in Brazil
2006

Renato César Ferreira de Souza
Maria Lucia Malard

This paper was presented as part of the International Seminar on Design, Lisbon, Portugal, ISCE 2006. It describes and analyses some experiments and results of the research project “Advanced informational technologies towards new management”, developed in Brazil. A massive amount of Brazilians lives nowadays in houses with poor conditions of sanitation and comfort, usually built in illegally appropriated terrain, against urban regulations and without adequate infrastructure. Government interventions to improve these conditions are usually not permanent and continuous due to political or financial oscillations. Thus affected communities tend to self organize themselves to defend their rights to a decent house. As an alternative to the lack of financial resources they seek the collaborative way in the organization of self-constructed settlements, which are an alternative solution to housing problems, based on collective effort and community organization, with government’s technical and financial support. More than the beneficiary community, self-constructed settlements involve several other agents, as technical offices, consultants and specialized workers, all of them hired to participate in the planning, project and building phases.

The Architecture School of UFMG, in partnership with PUC-Minas and Prefeitura Municipal de Belo Horizonte, develop the project “Advanced informational technologies towards new management”, which objective to enhance and develop processes involved in self-constructed settlements, by means of computational resources, in the conception, execution, management, registration, documentation and dissemination of information. It focuses on the qualification of self-constructors through the use of new technologies that enhance their possibilities of integration in the market. This has been obtained, for instance, by the usage of videogames through internet, appealing to the seduction of electronic media.

The project is based on the developed knowledge in the following research themes:
(a) housing design with users participation, using interactive virtual modeling;
(b) elimination of architectural conflicts and usual problems on design and management of previously studied processes;
(c) methodology for interaction, in real time, of designers/technicians/self-constructors, by means of an interactive graphic environment through internet;
(d) training and qualification of workers through this interactive graphic environment (video games);

The most innovative aspect of the project is the usage of advanced computational technologies and the development of computer potentials among those who have not gone or gone for very little time to formal schools. Testing the possibilities of stimulating adult’s learning by means of the seductive artifices of electronic interfaces is the most important sub-product.

The project is sponsored by FINEP (Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos) an agency of The Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) in Brazil, responsible for promotion of technological development and innovation.

The paper will describe three examples of games and their issues, discussing about the importance of the new technologies in that context. Some conclusions are drawn at the end, focusing the use of new technologies to promote social inclusion.

Rodrigo Peronti Santiago

Paper to the 17th World Congress on Ergonomics from the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), China, Beijin. It presents the results of a reflection considering the intersection point between
ubiquitous computing and Ergonomics, and it will exemplify that integration by solving a problem in the regulation of the workload involved when moving in the interior of buildings. It is believed that the Ubiquitous and Ergonomics combined could be a solution to the problem of misunderstandings, loss and a more comfortable ride inside buildings and this will benefit the visitors as well as the people who
actually work in the building. In order to achieve its objective this investigation counts on a multidisciplinary view that includes Architecture, Ergonomics and Psychology. The solution to the problem will be presented as an integrated hypothesis and case study, concluding about the benefits of multidisciplinary approaches to deal with ergonomics.
